Difficult as they are to sum up in a few words, one thing you can certainly say about the members of Limpopo is that they sure know how to show folks a rollicking good time! Offering what they themselves term "crazy Russian folk 'n' roll," this high-energy ensemble of musical pirates plays a heady blend of rich, up-tempo Russian folk music and original jazz and blues compositions, replete with outrageous dancing, magnificent costumes, and some truly breathtaking vocal arrangements. Their latest CD is Rybalochka, but they really have to be seen live!
Limpopo's impressive lineup features Igor Khramov (balalaika, vocals, trombone, guitar, percussion), Yuri Fedorko (accordion, guitar, vocals, acrobatics), Dmitri Mamokhin (bass balalaika, trumpet, vocals), Oleg Shramm (keyboards and vocals), Alexander Kalinin (accordion, dancing), and several drummers, reputedly including Gregori Rasputin.
Founded in Moscow in 1986, the ensemble followed Yuri and Igor to the U.S. in 1991. They quickly gained noteriety in this country, performing at music and comedy festivals and college campuses, as well as being featured in a long-running national TV ad for Kit Kat candy bars and numerous TV series and film soundtracks. They even played—by special request—at Peter Ustinov's birthday party!
