Devine's Jug Band, California Honeydrops
Wednesday, October 28, 2009
rhythm & roots double-bill
Door 7:00 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $18.50

Devine's Jug Band offers a fresh take on the music that wowed 'em on Beale Street in the 1920s and '30s. Recreating tunes from classic jug bands like the Mississippi Sheiks, Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers, and the East Texas Serenaders are Mayumi Urgino (fiddle), Meredith Axelrod (guitar, kazoo, vocals), and Jacob Groopman (banjolin), led valiantly on the jug, washboard, cheek-o-phone, kazoo, and vocals by Pete Devine.

Formed in the subway stations of Oakland, the California Honeydrops cross genres from roots and blues to R&B and soul, their playful sound tied together by unique instrumentation, soulful vocal harmonies, and a funky, good-times New Orleans style. Playing everything from fiddle and gutbucket bass to trumpet and barrelhouse piano are frontman Lech Wierzynski, Chris Burns, Nansamba Ssensalo, and Ben Malament.
