Door 7:30 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $18.50

Singer-songwriter Powell St. John comes from the same fertile Texas soil that nurtured legendary musicians like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Townes Van Zandt. An esteemed crafter of songs with a timeless knack for lyrics and a unique sense of melody, Powell has been writing since the early 1960's, with many of his songs covered by the likes of Janis Joplin, Doug Sahm, and Boz Scaggs. A prodigious harmonica player, Powell specializes in folk and blues-rock ditties with a distinct tejas flavor.

Born in Houston, Powell moved to Austin in 1959 and soon landed a gig at Threadgill's, performing as The Waller Creek Boys with Janis Joplin and Lanny Wiggins. In the late '60s, he moved to San Francisco and helped found the blues and rock band, Mother Earth. Inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2005, Powell currently resides in Berkeley.

Tonight, Powell regales us with tunes from his illustrious original repertoire, spotlighting selections from his recent CD, On My Way To Houston (Tompkins Square Records). He's backed for the evening by guitarist Duane Aslaksen, Bob Fagan on guitar and banjo, and Tom Forgotten on standup bass.
