music of the world from Brazil-based guitarist
Door 7:30 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $18.50

Coloring his music with influences from his life's wanderings, bossa nova guitarist/composer Rick Udler's playing is enriched with a lively mix of Brazilian rhythm, American blues and jazz, and even overtones of funk and ragtime. Born in Santiago, Chile, to Argentine parents, Rick has resided in São Paulo, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Miami, all of which have left their mark on his fresh, elaborate compositions. With a sweet, delicate touch and swinging phrasing, Rick's style is also heir to the famed Brazilian guitarist Paulinho Nogueira and the Afro-percussion sounds of Baden Powell, his most distinct influences.

In 1996, Rick's duo CD with Brazilian vocalist Maria Alvim, Rhythm and Romance, was widely praised. He recently followed with an all-instrumental recording, Papaya.

Tonight Rick will be joined by special guests Alex Calatayud (percussion) and Harvey Wainapel (clarinet).

Rick will be teaching a workshop Sunday, September 7, on Brazilian guitar styles. See our workshop page for more information, and to register.
