Bluegrass Buffet: South Austin Jug Band, The Bluegrass Revolution
Thursday, May 22, 2008
a fresh bluegrass feast
Door 7:30 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $15.50

Tonight the Freight presents the spring edition of Bluegrass Buffet. South Austin Jug Band and the Bluegrass Revolution are on the bill, serving up a five-course menu of some of the freshest, tastiest bluegrass we've heard.

They may not actually have a jug, but the South Austin Jug Band sure doesn't let that stop them from having a good time! Embodying the joyful energy of the jug band spirit, this fresh and witty trio mixes sprightly original songs and choice covers by the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Beck with traditional bluegrass and string band numbers to create a difficult-to-pigeonhole sound that nonetheless has won them three Austin Music Awards for best bluegrass band. SAJB features vocalist and guitarist James Hyland, Dennis Ludiker on mandolin, and Texas State Junior Fiddle contest winner Bryan Beken.

A hard-driving stringband based in Oakland, the Bluegrass Revolution features members from wide-ranging backgrounds. Matt McAlear, Robin Eig, Steve May, Tom Widger, and Jess Poteralski play the traditional bluegrass array of guitars, fiddle, mandolin, and string bass, but their music is just as likely to take detours through gypsy jazz, alt country, blues, and progressive acoustic music. And make sure you request their slam-dunk rendition of "Don't Think Twice It's Alright"
