Tonight the Freight presents a hot selection of bands dishing out some of the freshest, tastiest bluegrass the Bay Area has to offer. Three acts, the Earl Brothers, the Whoreshoes, and Five Dollar Suit are on the bill.

The Earl Brothers, a four-piece, all-original string band, have a difficult-to-pigeonhole sound that some have described as "Hillbilly Gothic." Combining old-time respect with an avant-garde attitude, the group offers up tunes about death, drinking, chasing and losing women—and an occasional honky-tonk gospel to atone for their transgressions.

Somewhere between the old country bands of the 1930s and '40s and contemporary bluegrass outfits, the Whoreshoes play a fine blend of classic country and traditional bluegrass. Their irresistible sound and stage presence makes audiences feel like they've stepped straight back in time to a performance of the Louisiana Hayride.

Five Dollar Suit combines an array of traditional bluegrass and country material with powerful original compositions. Performances feature various combinations of mandolin, acoustic guitar, fiddle, standup bass, and dobro, showcasing four fantastic young pickers and singers: Jesse Appelman, Will Fourt, Mayumi Urgino, and Matt Cunitz.
