The Freight stage swings on tonight under the powerful spell cast by the Very Hot Club. A modern-day gypsy jazz quintet based in the Bay Area, the Very Hot Club creates a heady blend of the nostalgic and the contemporary. As featured on the CD, Samois Faire, the ensemble's repertoire is full of catchy, swinging originals and sparkling playing by guitarist George Cole, Kathy Sierra and Benito Cortez on violin, Vic Wong on guitar, and Simon Planting on string bass. Kathy and George also share some great chemistry as the group's vocalists.
Although their music is original, George and the Very Hot Club take their inspiration from the legendary 1930s European jazz band, Quintette du Hot Club de France. Fronted by gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli, the combo revolutionized jazz by applying an irresistible, string-fueled propulsion to the more sedate big-band sound of the time.
