Tonight the Freight is proud to present a hot selection of bands dishing out some of the freshest, tastiest bluegrass the Bay Area has to offer — The Mighty Crows, Belle Monroe & Her Brewglass Boys, and The Bluegrass Revolution. Coooome & get it!

The Mighty Crows' traditional style and repertoire is reminiscent of the seminal bluegrass acts of the 1940s and '50s. Formed in 2004, the band is built around the powerful trio singing of Chris Smith (guitar), Jeff Zieba (banjo), and Mark Wardenburg (fiddle). Band front man and South Bay bluegrass veteran Ken Torke (mandolin) and bass stalwart John Kael round out the group.

Hard-driving bluegrass highlighted with wacky humor and a flare for showmanship are the trademarks of Belle Monroe & the Brewglass Boys. Strong, bluesy vocalist Belle is joined by Ted Silverman (mandolin), Tom Drohan (bass), Rick Hendricks (steel guitar), Jordan Klein (banjo), and Diana Greenberg (fiddle). The Brewglass Boys deliver songs both traditional and obscure, all with sparkling vocals, finely tuned arrangements, inventive delivery, and blazing instrumental skills.

The Bluegrass Revolution is a hard-driving, unconventional string band from Oakland. Fusing traditional elements and a modern approach, Robin Eig (guitar), Matt McAlear (mandolin), Steve May (fiddle), Tom Widger (bass), and Jess Poteralski (guitar) cleverly combine bluegrass, alt-country, gypsy jazz, blues, and progressive acoustic styles to create a sound that is as revolutionary as it is genuine.
