double bill of groundbreaking new Jewish music
Door 7:30 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $19.50

The vanguard of new Jewish music bursts onto the Freight stage tonight when the Klez-X and Davka appear for an evening of unbridled innovation, amazing virtuosity, and irresistible soul.

The phenomenal group of virtuosos known as the Klez-X (formerly The San Francisco Klezmer Experience) mines the rich depths of klezmer, Yiddish folk and art song, and modern jazz to create a brilliantly original sound. Their groundbreaking work includes new compositions, traditional pieces, and modernist settings of 20th century Yiddish literature. Founded by violinist and composer Daniel Hoffman, the band boasts reed player Sheldon Brown, Yiddish singer and accordionist Jeanette Lewicki, bassist Richard Saunders, vocalist and trumpeter Stephen Saxon, trombonist Charlie Seavey, and percussionist Kevin Mummey.

Davka's music has been called "neo-Jewish-roots-fusion," "the acoustic equivalent of a Chagall painting," and "fiddler-on-too-much-Turkish-coffee," but they're perhaps best described by their own name, a Hebrew slang term meaning "contrary to expectation." Redefining world music with seamless compositions inspired by klezmer, classical, Middle Eastern and Asian rhythms, jazz and avant garde, the group's music brims with passion, lyricism, and virtuosic interplay. Davka features Paul Hanson on bassoon, Daniel Hoffman on violin, Kevin Mummey on percussion, and Moses Sedler on cello.
