Sunday, May 6, 2007
Irina Rivkin, Moira Smiley with VOCO, Ashley Maher
Door 7:30 P.M., Music 8:00 P.M. | Purchase advance tickets: $17.50

Tonight's performers stir the imagination and pump the adrenaline with their unique approach to songcraft rooted in the sounds of world music.

Outmusic Award Recipient and founder of Berkeley's Rose Street House of Music, Irina Rivkin has performed for 25 years, ever since she was a child, singing jazz and Russian folk in a family band. Her gutsy originals journey into the personal and the political, with occasional travels into Russian and Spanish language lyrics. Irina layers her poetry with rich textured harmonies, swirling with vocal percussive beats, all created live using her loop station instrument. Los Angeles-based Moira Smiley & VOCO is a fiery vocal ensemble that draws on traditional Eastern European and Appalachian harmony and rhythm to create music that is both unusual and memorable. Moira, John Ballinger, Jess Basta, Jessica Catron, and Christine Enns weave their lush, precise vocals with banjo, cello, and body percussion to bring Moira's plaintive, rhythmic songs joyously to life.

Canadian-born singer-songwriter Ashley Maher combines African rhythms and percussion with jazz, folk, and rock influences and stunningly beautiful and intricate vocal arrangements. Now a resident of Los Angelses, Ashley has been steadily building herself a reputation as a world music diva with the shimmering, heady multicultural brew she has created over the course of several acclaimed CDs.
