Best know for her work with Irish supergroup Danú—recent recipients of the BBC Folk Music Award for Best Band—Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (pronounced MWI-ren Nick OWL-eve) is a richly expressive vocalist and an extremely talented flute and whistle player. Singing in both Gaelic and English, Muireann enchants her audiences with lilting, lyrical folk music that has its feet planted firmly in tradition and scorching instrumentals to light a flame under things.
While growing up, Muireann was immersed in the vibrant West Kerry tradition of wild dance music and soulful airs. Attending music sessions with her fiddler father, she learned flute and tin-whistle and sean-nós (old-style) songs. Joining Danú in 2003, she helped propel the band into the forefront of the Irish traditional scene.
Tonight Muireann spotlights tunes from her eclectic solo debut CD, Daybreak (Compass).
